Today’s Renter’s Rights Bill Report Stage Debate allowed me to explain the importance of this Labour Government’s rental reforms.
For the 22% of households in Gillingham and Rainham who live in the private rented sector, this Bill protects them from being removed from their homes by abolishing Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions once and for all. The introduction of the Decent Homes Standard ensures that tenants no longer have to put up with mould, disrepair or unsafe conditions.
I also welcome the establishment of a new Ombudsman which will hold those who do not uphold the law accountable. Whilst the previous government promised reform and failed to deliver, in the first 100 days we brought forward this landmark legislation to secure dignity and fairness for renters.
